Dr Iestyn Jowers (E&I) will be giving a short talk at the opening event of the City of Codes and Light festival on 01 October 2025. Organised by Milton Keynes Islamic Arts and Culture (MKIAC), the event takes place at Bletchley Park. Talk synopsis as follows:
‘Patterns and tilings: beyond aesthetics’
Islamic geometric patterns are appreciated for their aesthetic beauty, offering seemingly unlimited interpretations of repeating figures and forms. This talk explores the underlying structure of these patterns, revealing how their aesthetic results from repetition of shapes and spatial relations. And, it introduces an exciting and innovative area of engineering research at the Open University, where 3D printed structures are investigated, to determine the material properties that result from the same underlying mathematics.
There is free entry, however for security reasons, people need to register. There will be hospitality available on arrival.
There is also a light parade which takes place on Saturday 04 October 2025, an event open to all. More information is available here: https://www.destinationmiltonkeynes.co.uk/news/milton-keynes-city-of-codes-and-light-festival-2025/
